Internship Opportunities
The Office of the Public Defender (Montgomery County) welcomes contact from current law students, recent graduates, and other interested parties who are seeking internships. We accept applications for unpaid positions on a continuous rolling basis, so interested parties may apply at any time. Depending on office needs and intern qualifications, responsibilities can include but are not limited to: legal research and writing; drafting motions, pleadings, and briefs; assisting with preparations for hearings and trials; file management; reviewing and organizing discovery material; and client contact (participating in phone interviews and client visits at the jail).
Our team of investigators and social workers also welcome contact from students in social work and criminal justice. Volunteers will gain experience in conducting criminal investigations and psychosocial investigations for sentencing purposes, with responsibilities including but not limited to: interviewing, research, records collection, and assisting with community linkage. Volunteers in this department should be willing to perform some field work.
Individuals interested in interning should submit a letter of interest, resume, three (3) references, a current transcript, and a legal writing sample to careers@montgomerydefender.org, using the subject line "Internship" for an opportunity throughout the school year or "Intern Summer Program" for consideration for one of four openings each summer.
In your application, please offer a proposed schedule and indicate the department(s) or areas for which you have the most interest. (For example, law, criminal justice/investigations, and/or social work.) The agency will contact applicants whose qualifications and availability match agency needs. Interns hired in any capacity are required to adhere to confidentiality restrictions.
